A Sessile Taxonomy
A Sessile Taxonomy is a set of collectible trading cards that I made as a means of cataloging my work. As a kid, I loved collecting cards of all sorts, particularly the early Star Wars trading cards introduced in the 70’s. The collectibility of a thing draws upon this strange desire we have around control and completion. When series or sets have an assigned value in their totality, the acquisition of each item in the set fulfills and satisfies a deeply rooted desire…especially when it is that one piece in the set that is particularly hard to find.
In this series of cards, I created intentional rarity for certain cards as well as variants that were produced in very limited numbers. There are cards that I have hand signed and even a handful of original drawings that I have placed in random packs. Each card back has a poem, some data around materials used, size, year, card number and a star indicating the cards rarity. For a key to the materials icons, see the bottom of this page. There is also some kind of blurb at the bottom that connects to my thinking when I made the piece itself. In all, the set contains 35 cards. There are 24 sculptures represented, some having a couple of variants.

Series 1 - This card is from the Divas collection and is a rare card. This card was printed with a purple star designating it as a legendary rare which was a typo. Above you see the purple star card but it was reprinted with the appropriate yellow star. Some of the purple star versions made it into packs before the mistake was caught. There are at least 5 signed versions of this card out there. There were 50 of these cards produced in series 1.
